Established in 1999, the FCC Long Island Chinese School has served adopted children and their families in developing a strong link to their Chinese Heritage. Organized completely by parent volunteers, the school has continued to grow with each year.The focus of our program is Mandarin Language and Chinese culture, geared specifically for the needs of our community of families - - families who do not speak Mandarin at home, nor have extensive knowledge of Chinese culture.

Our school is unique in that classes are held jointly for children and their parents who attend together. As a result, our school fosters an environment that acts as a support group for both parents and children alike.

Language is taught first through songs, dance and games, and then as young children progress in their abilities, become used to a classroom setting, and further develop their fine motor skills, lessons continue to progress. Soon including character recognition first through reading, and then writing. Stroke order is taught through an innovative approach of cutting and piecing together characters. This technique was developed by the Principal, Ms. Man-Li Lin and is now used by other schools across the US and in China. It has allowed even our youngest children to learn over 50 characters in a years time.
Man-Li has written all of the textbooks. Along with language, many cultural elements are taught. Among these are Tai Chi, Shaolin Kung Fu and various styles of traditional dance. Our families are exposed to a variety of Chinese foods, and traditions not often found on Long Island. Our school has been introduced, and embraced by the Flushing Chinese-American Community and offers occasional visits to the many cultural opportunities available in the area.In short, our program provides a very unique and important opportunity for enrichment to our very unique and important families.

Thousands and thousands of years ago, there were no stars in the dark evening sky, only the sun at daytime, and the moon at night. There was a castle on the rainbow where lived the most beautiful, loving, and the most giving fairies. They tried to make the universe look prettier and more colorful.
One day, while they were decorating the earth -- the planet we are living right now, one of the fairies said, “ Why don’t we make it have different colors at different seasons?”
“ Yes, ” others cheered, “we love the earth and we like it to be the most beautiful planet in the universe.”
So, they decorated the spring with flowers and grass; the summer with cicadas singing and butterflies flying; the autumn with falling leaves; and the winter with crystal ice and white snow.
After the beautiful earth was adorned, they enjoyed watching the earth in the spring, the summer, the autumn, and the winter at daytime; but not at night. They could not see clearly the earth that they loved so much!
One fairy suggested, “Why don’t we transform to the stars? We’ll shine in the dark, show the directions, and travel around the world.”
Thereupon, they changed to the glittering, sparkling stars in the sky. At their departure, they hugged each other, promising that they would see each other again from time to time.
Wow! For the people on the earth, the sky became so warm, so beautiful, so bright, and so splendid because of the little stars. People watch the milky galaxy and cherish the immortal stars.
The stars traveled around and glimmered. Some of them went the east, some went the west, south, and north. They missed each other no matter where they went, and they connected to each other—by heart, by memory, and by soul.
Thousands years after
Some of the stars were attracted by the profound culture of China when they looked down over it. They transformed to Chinese babies and went to China. Some of them were amazed at the peaceful and beautiful land of America. They became American and their names are Mommy and Daddy. The distance, the time, and the appearance didn’t dilute the love between them. The Chinese babies called for Mommy and Daddy, the American parents prayed to reunite with their precious. They prayed with their heart, with their love, and with their patience. Finally, they heard from each other, they connected to each other, and they came to each other. Through the mountains, through the oceans, Mommy and Daddy flew to China to pick up their missing parts.
(Daughters) I was a little star in the sky
Sparkling over land and seas.

(Mothers) You were a little star in the sky
Shinning in our dreams.

(Daughters) I traveled and shed my light
Throughout China’s scenery.

(Mothers) We wished upon your light
nd heard you calling for “mommy,”

(Daughters) Calling “daddy,” calling “mommy”
Don’t’ forget your little star.

(Mothers) Through land, air and water
We’d take you home from where you are.

(Daughters)Thank you Daddy, thank you Mommy
For giving a new life to me.

(Mothers) Thank you god, thank you fate
You light up our family.

They knew each other and loved each other long before they met in these lives. They had such a long journey to find each other through the vast space and the time. In a flash, they knew they would stay together in this life in the America, the land they called “HOME.”

It’s the fate. It’s the fate - their reunion.
